What does it mean to practice Maya Yoga and who was it designed for?

Everyone and anyone can practice Maya Yoga. The beauty of this style is that it serves all level of students. Maya Yoga is not difficult. It is straightforward and clearly taught. The most difficult part of any class is learning to pay attention and be present. Maya Yoga will teach you how to do that .

As a beginner, you will want to start with the basic standing pose classes to learn the correct alignment of the poses to keep you  safe. Also Sun salutations classes are good to get you into the flow and learn to use your breath.  Every class has lots of detail which makes it accessible to all.

There are so many benefits to yoga. You will learn to focus and calm your mind which is where much of our suffering is. You will gain flexibility in your body and your mind. Yoga is a self reliant healing system so you will learn to heal yourself and take personal responsibility for your life. Yoga gives you confidence and equanimity. You will feel more grounded and centered. Yoga teaches you how to be in the present moment and how to make good conscious decisions that will affect your future in a more positive way.

It’s a good idea to get yourself some props for Maya yoga practice. The props give you access to the action in a pose and are used to help you in your practice. You should have a yoga mat, a pair of yoga blocks, a yoga belt, 2-3 blankets, and a bolster.

How was Maya Yoga created?

COMPLEMENTARY SYSTEMS | For over 30 years, Nicki Doane has been a student of yoga throughout the world. Having studied under two great yoga masters, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and B.K.S. Iyengar, has deeply informed the depth of her knowledge and practice. As a dedicated student to both teachers, Nicki has found the complements of these schools and formed Maya Yoga in Maui, HI. She has always been intent on creating a school of yoga which emphasized foundation work, alignment, and supportive poses to bring each student into their own center. Yoga is spirit in action. As Nicki teaches, she inspires you to find a place of spirit inside, recognizing the profound connection between self and spirit.
