The 8 Limbs of Yoga: Asana, Pranayama, Meditation

The eight limbs are the pillars of Yoga and are called Ashtanga- “Asht” means eight
and “anga” means limb. The first four limbs are thought to be the External limbs and the next four are the Internal limbs. The limbs begin with the Yamas and Niyamas, essentially the codes of conduct both universally and personally. It is said that one cannot practice yoga without Yama and Niyama. In this Intensive we will explore these tenets and how they affect our yoga practice. The third and fourth limbs are Asana and Pranayama, the poses and the breathing practices most familiar to modern yogis. The first week of the Intensive will explore these first four limbs through Maya Yoga Vinyasa practice and some discussion based sessions . The second week will begin to explore the next four limbs; the internal limbs. They include pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and Samadhi; namely the drawing in of the senses, focusing the mind, meditation, and ultimate bliss. The limbs are believed to be somewhat sequential and will be approached that way. Nicki has a great way of weaving yoga philosophy into the asana practice making the teachings relatable to all. Nicki will teach strong alignment based classes accessible to students of all levels.
