Pratyahara: Drawing In The Senses To Develop A More Focused Mind

Pratyahara is the fifth limb of Ashtanga yoga and is loosely translated as the drawing
in of the senses. It is a natural byproduct of a conscious asana and pranayama practice that has awareness of the Yamas and Niyamas( the universal and personal code of conduct). One does not just immediately have the ability to focus the mind and go inside; that is taught through a conscious yoga practice. Pratyahara is a necessary component of a meditation practice. If you cannot go inside yourself, you cannot meditate. The end of the calendar year is analogous to Prathayara. This is the time of year when the days get shorter and the nights
get longer and we tend to literally be inside more. It is a perfect time to reflect on the past year and through the practice of Maya Yoga learn to feel safe doing that. We are all containers full of our own experiences and we must take the time to examine our internal psyche in order to continue to grow and evolve as human beings. Through a focused asana and pranayama practice you will learn practical techniques to quiet your mind and draw your senses in to prepare you for a meditation practice.
