FOUNDATIONS OF MAYA YOGA: CORE TEACHING PRINCIPLES TO SET YOU ON YOUR PATH TO BECOMING A GREAT TEACHER

This course is required to obtain a 200 Hour YA RYT certificate with Nicki Doane at Maya Yoga.  In this 100 hour module you will learn the basics of alignment in asana as Nicki firmly believes that alignment of the body influences and affects the alignment of the mind. Nicki’s approach to Maya yoga is very personal and each student will learn plenty about themselves, both body and mind.  One of the most important ingredients in being a great yoga teacher is having a personal yoga practice which in Sanskrit is called “sadhana”.  In this training we will begin to explore “svadhyaya”- the study of the self, what that entails and how to develop a personal practice.  As yoga is not only a physical practice,  some yoga philosophy and psychology will be introduced to help bridge the connection between the body and the mind.  Maya yoga is about honoring and serving individual students and helping mentor teachers that are deeply interested in helping people through the art and science of yoga. This course will begin to shed light on your personal habits and how to address them.  We will work as a group learning from each other. Each training is always shaped by the students who attend. It is an organic process with core principles guiding the experience.  This Foundation course may be combined with another 100 hour training with Nicki to create a 200 hour YA teaching certificate.

Some topics covered in this training include: Asanas (postures), Pranayama (breathing techniques), Bandhas (subtle body energy tools), Seeing and Understanding Bodies, Hands on Adjustments, Sequencing, Communication Skills, Anatomy & Physiology, Modifications of Poses, Chanting, Meditation, Chakra Exploration, Yoga Ethics, Lifestyle, Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and Yoga Philosophy.

MAYA YOGA CITTA FLOW TRAINING: CONSCIOUS VINYASA YOGA WITH YOGA SUTRA STUDY

Maya Yoga is a highly conscious style of yoga that believes the body and mind are inextricably linked. Maya Yoga vinyasa fusion is a style of yoga that Nicki teaches that draws on her extensive study of both Ashtanga yoga and Iyengar yoga. Nicki believes that the individual student is worth paying attention to and she teaches classes that honor both the individual and the group. "Citta” is the Sanskrit word for consciousness, both within and beyond. One of the meanings of vinyasa is an intelligent sequence of postures.  This training will teach you how to create vinyasa practices that are both intelligent, challenging, and safe for all students.  It is not enough to only be conscious of our bodies in asana, we must also be conscious of our mind when we practice and throughout our day.  In this training, we will continue to study the yoga sutras of Patanjali as they give support to us in our practice and help us to understand the connection of the mind in consciousness.  We will chant yoga sutras daily as part of the morning practice and will study them throughout the course.  There will be opportunity to teach the vinyasa sequences you create and to receive feedback on your teaching.
This course may be combined with the 100 Hour Foundations course to create a 200 Hour YA RYT certificate.

Join Nicki at the Maya Yoga studio on Maui to continue to develop both your yoga practice and your teaching.

Topics covered include Asana, Pranayama, Intelligent Sequencing, Bandha, Mudra, Chanting, Anatomy, Meditation, Yoga Philosophy and Psychology, Seeing and Understanding Bodies, Physical & Verbal Adjustments, Modifications, and Restorative yoga

Maya Yoga with Nicki Doane at River Yoga in Thun, Switzerland

Are you feeling that something is missing in modern yoga today? Are you craving a practice that both honors and offers insights into you and your experience? A practice that is not focused solely on the poses, but also on the process of yoga as seen through the poses? If you answered yes to any of the above, then this workshop is for you. Through Nicki’s experienced teaching of Maya Yoga, learn to make the connection between the alignment of the poses and the alignment of the mind. Maya is a Sanskrit word that means “illusion” and refers to what we think and perceive as real in this world. Patanjali, the original OG yoga psychologist said that the easiest way to access our psyche is through our physical tissue. The asanas (poses) are a means and a vehicle to transformation because they give us practical tools that we can use everyday in our yoga practice. Through both Dynamic and restorative yoga practices Nicki will lead you through an experience of yoga in an intelligent, compassionate, supportive, and often humorous way that will leave you transformed.

All levels of yoga practitioners are welcome . Advanced students and teachers will be able to deepen their practice and teaching skills in this intensive course.

The 8 Limbs of Yoga: Asana, Pranayama, Meditation

The eight limbs are the pillars of Yoga and are called Ashtanga- “Asht” means eight
and “anga” means limb. The first four limbs are thought to be the External limbs and the next four are the Internal limbs. The limbs begin with the Yamas and Niyamas, essentially the codes of conduct both universally and personally. It is said that one cannot practice yoga without Yama and Niyama. In this Intensive we will explore these tenets and how they affect our yoga practice. The third and fourth limbs are Asana and Pranayama, the poses and the breathing practices most familiar to modern yogis. The first week of the Intensive will explore these first four limbs through Maya Yoga Vinyasa practice and some discussion based sessions . The second week will begin to explore the next four limbs; the internal limbs. They include pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and Samadhi; namely the drawing in of the senses, focusing the mind, meditation, and ultimate bliss. The limbs are believed to be somewhat sequential and will be approached that way. Nicki has a great way of weaving yoga philosophy into the asana practice making the teachings relatable to all. Nicki will teach strong alignment based classes accessible to students of all levels.

Pratyahara: Drawing In The Senses To Develop A More Focused Mind

to Nov 22

Pratyahara: Drawing In The Senses To Develop A More Focused Mind

Pratyahara is the fifth limb of Ashtanga yoga and is loosely translated as the drawing
in of the senses. It is a natural byproduct of a conscious asana and pranayama practice that has awareness of the Yamas and Niyamas( the universal and personal code of conduct). One does not just immediately have the ability to focus the mind and go inside; that is taught through a conscious yoga practice. Pratyahara is a necessary component of a meditation practice. If you cannot go inside yourself, you cannot meditate. The end of the calendar year is analogous to Prathayara. This is the time of year when the days get shorter and the nights
get longer and we tend to literally be inside more. It is a perfect time to reflect on the past year and through the practice of Maya Yoga learn to feel safe doing that. We are all containers full of our own experiences and we must take the time to examine our internal psyche in order to continue to grow and evolve as human beings. Through a focused asana and pranayama practice you will learn practical techniques to quiet your mind and draw your senses in to prepare you for a meditation practice.

Karma Yoga: The Yoga of Action

In the Bhagavad Gita, one of the most sacred yogic texts, yoga is defined as karma: action or work. In the story, the teacher, Krishna, tells his student, Arjuna, that the goal of yoga is not the fruit of our work, but the work itself. We are never done with this work of life. Yoga is both a science and an art. I believe the we practice yoga to support ourselves through our own life; there is no end goal to all of this. As the yoga philosopher Patanjali says in the Yoga Sutras, we must learn to relax the intensity of our effort and meditate on the endless energy within because this ( life) simply never ends. We do the practice for the sake of the practice, not the fruits of the labor. Yoga is the journey and not simply the destination.
I love yoga because it is both a science and an art, a perfect balance of the practical with the spiritual. In this weeklong Intensive , we will learn how to be in our practice for the right reasons and how to apply the practical teachings of yoga to our life.

We will cover asana, pranayama, meditation, restorative yoga, and an introduction to yoga philosophy.

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali with Nicki Doane at Anchorage Yoga, Alaska

According to Yoga Sutras, the source of most of our suffering comes from our over-analytical mind. The sutras tell us that yoga is the path to Self Realization, which many believe is the practice of getting to know yourself better. Yoga is the yoking or joining of seemingly opposite forces, like the sun and the moon, or the mind and the body. To think that the practice of yoga is only about the physical body is misguided. We are holistic beings and cannot separate or compartmentalize ourselves into either an organization or a mind. They are intertwined and deeply connected.

Free Your Hips, Free Your Life
Friday, Nov 2, 2018
6:00pm - 8:30pm

Free Your Hips, Free Your Life
It is now an acknowledged fact that tight hips can be a serious risk to your health. The AMA, American Medical Association, has publicly declared that sitting is the new smoking. Yogis of course have known this for a long time and there are many poses to help open the hips safely and effectively. There are four sides to the hips, the front, back, inner and outer which are made up of the quadriceps and psoas ( hip flexors), the hamstrings, external rotators and the inner groins. This class will cover all four sides and share poses to help you maintain your open hips throughout your life. We will also do some poses to open the feet as they are important too. *mostly asana, active and restorative*

Passport to Your Core - A Yoga Practice to Guide You into Yourself While Turning Yourself Upside Down
Saturday, Nov 3, 2018
9:00 am - 11:30 am

What is Yoga? If we look at the literal meaning of the Sanskrit word, it means to yoke or to bring together. Real yoga is about calming the mind with all its fluctuations and agitations. Most of our suffering and fears as human beings is between our ears, right in the middle of our consciousness. Of course there is also plenty of suffering and pain that we experience in our physical and emotional bodies as well. The poses of yoga are great because they not only lengthen and strengthen the muscles in our body but they offer us key insights into the workings of our minds. The poses reveal what is already there. It is a beautiful mystery how the poses become keys that unlock deep hidden parts of ourselves, parts that we have kept locked way and that we repress. It is the dark areas of our consciousness that have so much to teach us about ourselves. Maya Yoga teaches a way of practicing yoga that is as much about aligning the physical body as it is about learning how to love yourself more everyday.

This class will use asana and pranayama to examine the mind body connection more deeply. The focus will be on the group of poses known as the Inversions - the upside down poses. Through an intelligent sequence of poses we will practice Handstands at the wall whether you are a pro already or a complete novice. Forearm balance will be done at the wall as well and headstand and shoulderstand will be introduced and shared as well. We will complete the class with the most restful pose, Viparita karani, legs up against the wall.

This class will be taught in a supportive compassionate environment with the focus on the process of yoga and not necessarily on the final pose. All are welcome!
*asana, pranayama, some partner work, props used for sure*

The Citti Vrittis - Exploring Ancient Yogic Thoughts on the Root Causes of an Afflicted Mind
Saturday, Nov 3, 2018
1:00pm-3:30pm

One of the most important books on Yoga Psychology is the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Patanjali is believed to be an avatar of Lord Vishnu who came to earth to share both Sanskrit and the teaching of yoga with humanity in an effort to uplift them and offer guidance to their spiritual journey. These teachings are still highly relevant today and in this class we will look at the “Vrittis” which are the fluctuations and agitations of the mind. We all have them and they can lead to an unstable mind and a distorted perception of reality. We will cover the five vrittis that are said to be painful and the five vrittis that are said to be seemingly non painful. There will be discussion of the vrittis and how they affect our daily lives and we will also chant them together in the call and response style known as kirtan.

*mostly discussion with some chanting*

Drop In and Let Go - Deep Restorative Yoga
Saturday, Nov 3, 2018
5:00pm-7:30 pm

Life is so busy these days and in spite of all the technological gadgets we all have to help us manage our lives, we all experience some level of stress at some point. We often do not take the time to rest and reset our nervous systems and our brains and this can lead to even more stress. Our nervous system has two parts; sympathetic and parasympathetic. Sympathetic is the flight or fight repsonse- the active side , and the Parasympathetic is the more calming quieting side. It is vital to nourish both sides and this class is for the support of the parasympathetic. Please make the time for this class and let Nicki guide you into an experience where you learn to drop in, get quiet inside, and let go into deep relaxation. It is truly an art to be able to make the space and time for self care and you deserve it. This class is restorative in nature with bolsters and props and Nicki’s reading of the ancient Yoga myths.

*asana, pranayama, restorative*

Embracing the Unknown - Backward Bending Postures
Sunday, Nov 4, 2018
9:00am - 11:30am

Some of the most important and effective yoga poses are the ones that extend the spine and bring freedom to the back. They of course are known as backbends and many people can be intimidated by them. Allow Nicki to lead you through a safe and effective yoga practice that will prepare you for the backward bending poses very well. Through Sun Salutations, standing poses and lunges, your body will be ready to do backbends like you’ve never done them before. Some poses that will be included, but not limited to, are standing back arch, salabhasana, danurasana, setu bandha sarvangasana, and urdhva dhanurasana. If needed, Nicki has an intelligent way of working with the props so they both support and propel you deeper into the pose in a safe way. This class will end with twisting postures to relieve the spine and a deep restful savasana to realign your body and mind.
*asana, pranayama, props when needed*

Maya Yoga Vinyasa Fusion Flow
9:30am-12:30pm
This is a strong dynamic yoga class that incorporates all aspects of Maya Yoga including asana, pranayama, chanting, meditation, prayer, and deep relaxation, to leave you feeling recharged and inspired about your practice. Nicki likes to start the class slowly with poses that support the parasympathetic nervous system and then move slowly into seated chanting and pranayama. From there we will wake the body from the ground up, starting at the feet and moving through the legs, trunk, arms, and head. Sun salutations will be practiced to build internal heat and establish the harmonious flow of breath and movement known as “Vinyasa”. Standing poses are linked with the sun salutations to create the dynamic flow that is both detoxifying and rejuvenating. What happens from there is organic and may include backbends, forward bends, arm balances, inversions or hip openers depending on the students and the energy of the day. The end of the class will bring you back to yourself and leave you feeling more centered and grounded, especially after a long savasana with Nicki reading poetry to you.

With Faith Comes Courage: A Yoga Practice to Build Confidence & Strength
9:30am-12:30pm
Two of the foundational pillars of a consistent yoga practice are Shraddha - Faith , and Virya - Courage. The only way these can be established is through steady consistent personal practice. What happens on the mat in yoga should actually not stay on the mat but should follow us out the door and into our lives where we need it most. Yoga is a life support system and the poses are transformational tools that can touch us deeply both at a soul level and as a practical means of keeping our bodies fit and healthy. We need yoga in these hectic stressful lives that we lead. This class will be a combination of both active and restorative asana. We will be more active in the first half of the class to open the body and mind and to get the breath flowing and the heart beating and establish Faith in the efficacy of the practice. Nicki will teach an engaged asana class that includes standing poses and hip openers, pranayama, and some backbends and twists. The second half of the class will be more reflective in nature and slower. Restorative and supported poses will take you from the active side of the practice into the calming quieting side of yoga. Courage is having the strength to listen and speak from the heart and these softer poses will give you the opportunity to get in touch with what you’re feeling on the inside. Slowly you just may find what you’re looking for. *Active and restorative asana, pranayama, props used for sure*

Weekend Workshop at Vancouver, CA with Semperviva Yoga

Maya Yoga Workshops – Merging of The Mind & Body With Nicki Doane

This workshop will address the needs and mechanics of the physical body as well as our psychology by weaving the deep psychological teachings of the yoga sutras into the asana practice to show that we cannot separate the mind and body, ever.  There will be attention placed on how to do the postures safely with clear alignment directions while observing how the mind reacts to them. We are spiritual beings having a human experience, not the other way around. It is comforting to know that we are all in this together as human beings and that we are not alone. We are more similar than we are different.

Maya Yoga is a style of yoga that honors both the body and the mind, fusing the two seamlessly into one and helping us lead more productive full lives.

**To register for the workshop, please visit Semperviva Yoga website or contact Wilma at info@mayayogastudio.com.
